About the Project Gaja Lok

• Purpose & Theme: Project Gaja-Lok is a transnational “culture-nature” initiative dedicated to documenting and exploring the deep and enduring connections surrounding the Asian elephant, encompassing culture, history, ecology, and climate resilience across Asia.

• Scope & Approach:

  • The exhibition showcases artefacts and representations of elephants from across Asia — from ancient Indus-Valley seals and Bharhut railings to temple sculptures and Southeast Asian heritage (e.g. Thai, Cambodian).
  • The project seeks to trace how elephants have shaped human civilization: spiritually, artistically, politically, from ancient times (religion, mythology) to their contemporary ecological role.

• Significance of the Elephant: Through this project, the Asian elephant is positioned not just as a wildlife species, but as a “living emblem of ecological resilience” and a “revered cultural icon.”

• Long-Term Goals: The initiative aims to build a pan-Asian understanding of elephant heritage — bridging art, environment, history, and conservation, which could guide future collaborative heritage conservation and ecological efforts across countries.
