Context: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on 13, Oct 2025 announced the ‘Gomti Rejuvenation Mission’ for the uninterrupted flow of the river, with an ambitious target of intercepting 95 per cent of urban sewage flowing into the river.

  • The chief minister made the announcement at a meeting organised in collaboration with the Territorial Army.

Objective: To restore the water body to its “clean, uninterrupted, and pristine form”, reduce pollution levels and “revive the ecosystem” of the river.

Key Highlights:

  • The action plan will cover the entire river basin from Pilibhit to Ghazipur.
  • Officials stated that 39 major drains flow into the Gomti River, with 13 still untreated. The mission aims to ensure no untreated drain enters the river.
  • Currently, six sewage treatment plants (STPs) with a 605 MLD capacity are operational along the river. Under the mission, more drains will be diverted to these STPs, and new plants will be built while upgrading existing ones.
  • The action plan includes the development of new wetlands, such as Ekana Wetland and Sajan Lake in Lucknow.
  • Officials have been directed to hold monthly review meetings of Gomti task force and submit quarterly progress reports to the Chief Minister’s Office.

About Gomti Task Force

  • Established: January 2025 underthe National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG).
  • Composition: It includes the project director of the State Clean Ganga Mission and representatives from the irrigation department, Pollution Control Board, Jal Nigam, Lucknow Municipal Corporation, and Lucknow Development Authority, along with subject experts.
