The government of India hosts the ‘Run for Sun’ Marathon to celebrate International Sun Day in New Delhi.

- To highlights the crucial role of solar energy in enabling a greener and healthier Planet.
- The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) organized a ’this Marathon at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi.
- The ‘Run for Sun’ Marathon, features 3 km and 5 km races
International Sun Day celebrations also highlight the Solar Stops – it is a kiosks boasting a diverse array of elements that bring out the significance of solar energy.
- Solar stops have been set up at prominent malls in six Indian cities, namely Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Vadodara, Guwahati, Varanasi and Chennai.
The Ministry also announced Solart, an All-India Intra-School Solar Art Competition to celebrate solar energy through artistic expressions.
International Sun Day
- It is celebrated every year on May 3rd ,a special occasion to honour the Sun.
- Denis Hayes, an American environmentalist and solar power supporter, proposed Sun Day.
- He became well-known for organising the inaugural Earth Day, which took place on April 22, 1970.
- In 1978, the former USA President Jimmy Carter formally declared Sun Day, to promote solar energy as a viable and environmentally friendly energy source
- The celebration expanded internationally in 1994.
Significance of Marathon
- It was designed to raise awareness about the pivotal role of solar power in mitigating climate change and promoting a cleaner and healthier future for all.
