Context:

Barabanki secured first place in Uttar Pradesh in the review meeting on feeding fingerprint data of criminals into the National Automated Finger Print Identification System (NAFIS).

  • So far, over 4.5 lakh fingerprint records have been uploaded to the central NAFIS server, significantly aiding in the swift detection of crimes by enabling faster fingerprint searches and matches across the country.
  • Barabanki ranked first among the top districts in NAFIS for November and December 2024, as well as January and February 2025, followed by Gorakhpur (second place) and Shahjahanpur (third place) in the same sequence.
  • The police collected fingerprints from 1,620 criminals by achieving 100% data entry over four months under the NAFIS software.
  • With the establishment of NAFIS, the process of data entry under the Criminal Procedure (Identification) Act, 2022 began on July 1, 2022, across all districts of the state, including fingerprint units and other related departments.
  • To improve the system’s effectiveness, a state-wide review of fingerprint data entry was conducted, revealing commendable performance in some districts, boosting their rankings.

The NAFIS database helps in the rapid identification and tracking of criminals, as fingerprints of arrested individuals are promptly uploaded, leading to faster resolution of criminal cases.
