Recently, the Prime minister of India virtually addressed the third Summit for Democracy.
Key Highlights of the PM Address
- He highlights that India has an ancient and unbroken culture of democracy. It has been the lifeblood of Indian civilization.
- Consensus-building, open dialogue, and free discussion have resonated throughout India’s history. That is why Indian citizens consider India to be the “Mother of Democracy”.
- He emphasized the need for inclusivity, fairness, and participative decision-making in international systems and institutions.
He Highlights the following examples
- Parliament passed a law to ensure a minimum of one-third representation for women legislators.
- India lifted 250 million people out of poverty in the last 10 years.
- India delivered COVID-19 medicines and vaccines to more than 150 countries.
- India amplified the Voice of the Global South during its G-20 Presidency
Background of Summit for Democracy
- President Biden launched the historic Summit for Democracy in 2021 to strengthen democratic institutions, protect human rights, and accelerate the fight against corruption, both at home (USA) and abroad.
- The Summit for Democracy was first held on December 9-10th 2021, a virtual international conference hosted by the then President of the United States.
- It centred on three main topics: safeguarding against authoritarianism, addressing and combating corruption, and advocating for human rights.
- China and Russia, are not among invitees, although both Communist countries refer to themselves as democracies.
