Context:
Lucknow is set to launch a 170-km Orbital Railway Corridor to ease rail congestion and improve regional operations.
- The project, aims to connect seven major railway routes and enhance rail traffic flow in the region.
- The construction will cover sections like Lucknow-Kanpur, Lucknow-Shahjahanpur-Moradabad, and others. A detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared after a survey, with the project estimated to cost ₹4.25 crore.
- The corridor will help reduce disruptions caused by heavy traffic at key stations like Aishbagh, which handles a large volume of both passenger and freight trains.
Features of Orbital Railway Corridor
- A 170-km orbital railway corridor will be constructed around Lucknow.
- The corridor will link all seven major railway routes.
- It will feature “Y” connections and Rail-on-Rail (ROR) bridges over key routes.
- A new “greenfield mega passenger terminal” with over 30 tracks and 20 platforms will be developed.
- A large rail logistics park will be established near the Agra Expressway.
- The project is expected to save up to one hour per train.
