The CBI conducted raids on 30 locations, including three linked to former Governor Satya Pal Malik, to investigate alleged corruption in the Kiru Hydel Project contract award.

About current context:

  • The Kiru Hydroelectric Power Project is a significant initiative being developed over the Chenab River in the Kishtwar Tehsil of Doda district, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), India. 

Project Overview:

  • The Kiru project is a run-of-the-river scheme situated between the Kirthai II (upstream) and Kwar (downstream) hydroelectric plants.
  • It aims to harness the energy potential of the Chenab River, contributing to India’s renewable energy goals.
  • The project is being developed by Chenab Valley Power Projects (CVPP), a joint venture involving the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC, 49%), the Jammu & Kashmir State Power Development Corporation (JKSPDC, 49%), and the Power Trading Corporation (PTC, 2%).

Technical Details:

  • Concrete Gravity Dam: The project involves constructing a 135-meter-high concrete gravity dam near Kiru.
  • Catchment Area: The reservoir will cover an area of 6.5 kilometers in length and 1.03 square kilometers.
  • Diversion Tunnel: A 700-meter-long horse-shoe shaped diversion tunnel with two openings will redirect the river flow during dam construction.
