The Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2025 Report

• Recently, The Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) report 2025 has been released by Germanwatch, New Climate Institute, and Climate Action Network International.   

Objective of the Index

• The index tracks the progress of countries in addressing climate change, focusing on the world’s largest emitters of greenhouse gases (GHGs).

Top Rankings

• The top three spots on the list were left empty, indicating that no country met the required criteria for a high enough performance to be ranked in these positions.
• Denmark ranks 4th, followed by the Netherlands (5th) reflecting strong performance in climate action.

India’s Performance

• India is ranked 10th, signaling significant progress, but still areas for improvement in tackling climate challenges.
• India’s per capita emissions are 2.9 tons of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e), which is much lower than the global average of 6.6 tCO2e.
• As the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases and the fastest-growing major economy, India has committed to reaching net zero emissions by 2070.

Performance of Other Major Emitters

• China, the world’s largest emitter, ranks 55th, while the U.S., the second-largest emitter, follows in 57th place, both remaining among the very low performers.

Lowest-Ranked Countries

• The four lowest-ranked countries in the CCPI are Iran (67th), Saudi Arabia (66th), United Arab Emirates (65th), and Russia (64th), all major oil and gas producers.
