Context: The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, has developed the blueprint for Water metros to be implemented in 18 cities across the country.

- Under the Urban Water Metro Project, IWAI has assigned the responsibility of conducting the survey to Kochi Metro Rail Limited.
- IWAI has directed it to complete the survey in all these cities and submit its report by December 31, 2025.
18 cities to be included across 11 states and two union territories are:
- Stations are proposed at eight locations in Varanasi: Ramnagar, Shastri Ghat, Sant Ravidas Ghat, Chet Singh Ghat, Kashi Vishwanath Temple (Lalitha Ghat), Panchganga Ghat, Namo Ghat, and Adikeshav Ghat.
