Context: Uttar Pradesh appeared to be leading India’s electric vehicle (EV) revolution with more than four lakh electric vehicles registered.

  • The UP has taken the top place nationally, surpassing major states like Delhi and Maharashtra, having around 1.8 lakh electric vehicles each.
  • The UP govt had launched the Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy 2022 focusing at accelerating EV adoption, building a robust charging infrastructure and establishing UP as a global hub for EV and battery manufacturing.

  • The Uttar Pradesh government has recently sanctioned the setup of more than 300 new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across 16 municipal areas.
  • Ayodhya is projected to see the highest number of new charging points.
  •  India currently has approximately 33,000 EV chargers, with fast chargers making up 35% of the total.
  • In response of the growing demand, Chief Minister of UP has made the development of new fast-charging stations and the enhancement of existing ones a top priority.
  • Projections indicate that India could have as many as 102 million electric vehicles by 2030.
  • According to a study by Alvarez & Marsal, the current ratio of EVs to public chargers in the country is 135—significantly higher than the global benchmark of 6 to 20.
  • The Uttar Pradesh government is taking rapid steps to close this gap in public infrastructure.
