Context:
The Governments of France and Costa Rica are co-hosting the third United Nations Ocean Conference at the coastal city of Nice, France.
More on the News
• It marks the beginning of the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) which build upon the two previous conferences held in New York (2017, co-hosted by Sweden and Fiji) and Lisbon (2022, co-hosted by Portugal and Kenya).

• It takes place during the UN Decade of Ocean Science, and follows major global agreements such as the Marine Biodiversity Treaty and the Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework.
• The high-level international event brings together leaders, scientists, policymakers, and civil society actors from across the globe to discuss sustainable ocean governance and concrete actions for the health of the world’s oceans.
• Theme of the Conference 2025: “Accelerating action and mobilising all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean.”
• The conference aims to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG 14) and will feature a high-level meeting with world leaders, policymakers, and other stakeholders.
