Context: UP plans to restore Ayodhya’s ancient river ‘Tilodki Ganga’ which once was the lifeline of rural areas of Ayodhya has gradually vanished over time as the river land.

  • The river has been heavily encroached upon due to the construction of numerous buildings.
  • Its main stretch lies along the Allahabad National Highway, an area currently undergoing extensive development marked by large industrial establishments and major infrastructure projects.
  • The Uttar Pradesh government and the Ayodhya administration are working on a plan to rejuvenate the river.  
  • As part of this initiative, the river will undergo a complete transformation and be restored to its original state.
  • The river spans a total length of 46 kms, and work has started on a 7-kilometre stretch of the river as part of the first phase of the rejuvenation project.
  • The restoration work to bring the river back to its original form is underway between Gaura Brahmanan and Panditpur in the Sohawal area, under the MNREGA scheme.
  • The project is part of Uttar Pradesh’s ‘One District, One River’ initiative and aims to restore the river’s historical significance.
  • The National Green Tribunal (NGT) also took note of the river’s condition and directed the Ayodhya District Magistrate to take necessary steps for its revival, including exploring ways to reuse discharged water.
