Recently, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has released latest data, highlighting substantial growth in India’s renewable energy sector from October 2023 to October 2024.

  • This progress underscores India’s strong commitment to meeting its clean energy targets, aligned with the ambitious ‘Panchamrit’ goals.
  • Total Renewable Capacity: India added 24.2 GW of renewable energy, reaching 203.18 GW (13.5%) in October 2024, up from 178.98 GW a year earlier. When including nuclear energy, the total non-fossil fuel capacity rose to 211.36 GW from 186.46 GW in 2023.
    • Solar Power: Solar capacity grew by 20.1 GW (27.9%), reaching 92.12 GW in October 2024. The combined total solar capacity, including projects under development, stands at 250.57 GW, up from 166.49 GW last year.
    • Wind Power: Wind energy increased by 7.8%, growing from 44.29 GW in October 2023 to 47.72 GW in 2024. The total wind capacity under development has now reached 72.35 GW.
    • Hydro and Nuclear: Large hydro projects contributed 46.93 GW, and nuclear power added 8.18 GW to the renewable mix, further diversifying India’s clean energy portfolio.
    • Capacity Additions: From April to October 2024, India added 12.6 GW of renewable energy. In October 2024 alone, 1.72 GW was installed. The total capacity under development and tendered reached 233.63 GW, a sharp increase from 154.21 GW in 2023.

India’s Global Rank in Renewable Energy (as per REN21 Renewables 2024 Global Status Report):

  • 3rd in 3rd largest energy-consuming country globally.
  • 4th in Renewable Energy Installed Capacity (including Large Hydro).
  • 4th in Wind Power Capacity.
  • 5th in Solar Power Capacity.
  • This growth reflects India’s commitment to its renewable energy targets and its transition to a cleaner, greener energy future.
