Context:

Recently, Qatar became the first Gulf country to enter the US Visa Waiver Programme (VWP). 

More on the News: 

  • The US Department of State and Homeland Security jointly announced Qatar’s inclusion in the program. 
  • They commended Doha for meeting strict security requirements, highlighting the strengthening of strategic partnerships between the two nations.
  • After Brunei, The Gulf state of Qatar has become the second Muslim-majority country to be included in the US Visa Waiver Programme.
  • Qatar is the 42nd member of the visa waiver program, with nations added infrequently. 
  • Croatia was added in 2021 and Israel joined last year (2023). 
  • Only about 320,000 Qatari citizens holding valid passports are eligible for the program, despite Qatar’s total population exceeding 3 million.
  • From 1st October, US citizens will also be able to visit Qatar without a visa for up to 90 days.

About the US Visa Waiver Programme:

  • Purpose: The program allows citizens of qualifying nations to enter the US for business or tourism without a visa for up to 90 days, provided their countries meet specific eligibility criteria.
  • Eligibility Requirements: Nations must demonstrate a low visa refusal rate and a low rate of visa overstays and offer reciprocal treatment to American travelers. 
  • Eligible travelers must still obtain electronic approval through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), an online process that doesn’t require an in-person interview.
  • Security Measures: The US requires participating countries to meet stringent standards in counterterrorism, law enforcement, immigration enforcement, document security, and border management.

  • Strategic Partnership: Qatar has been recognized as an exceptional partner for the United States, with a growing strategic relationship in recent years.
  • Diplomatic Role: The Gulf country played a key role in negotiation talks between Hamas and Israeli officials for a cease-fire deal in Gaza and the release of hostages.
  • International Cooperation: Qatar was an instrumental US partner during the American withdrawal from Afghanistan and has taken a leading role in pressing the Taliban on human rights issues.
