Context:

The Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting launched Prasar Bharati – Shared Audio Visuals for Broadcast and Dissemination (PB-SHABD).

Key highlights of PB-SHABD

  • It is a news sharing service from Prasar Bharati that will provide free content across mediums, which will be free of copyright or credit obligations.
  • It will be a single-point source of news content for all print and electronic media industry of India.
    • However, the content won’t be available to end users.
  • The PB SHABD platform has been designed to provide daily news feeds in video, audio, text, photo and other formats to the subscribers from the media landscape.
  • The shared feeds can be used for customized storytelling across different platforms.
  • The service of PB-SHABD is being offered free of cost for the first year as an introductory offer and will provide news stories in all major Indian languages across 50 categories.
  • Significance: This will revolutionise the news industry and will massively support smaller news organisations that do not have access to an extensive network for content gathering.

About Prasar Bharati

  • It is a statutory autonomous body set up in 1997 under the Prasar Bharati Act, 1990.
  • It is the Public Service Broadcaster of the country, comprising of Doordarshan and All India Radio.
