Context:
As per the recent government data, only 6% of the candidates under the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) have joined their assigned positions.

- Of the 1.53 lakh internship offers made under the PMIS, a little over 50,000 were accepted, but only about 8,700 candidates (around 6%) have joined as interns so far.
 
First Round of Pilot Project:
- Companies posted over 1.27 lakh internship opportunities on the PMIS Portal nationwide.
 - In response, more than 6.21 lakh applications were received from around 1.81 lakh candidates.
 - Partner companies made over 82,000 internship offers to more than 60,000 candidates.
 - Out of these, over 28,000 candidates accepted the offers and more than 8,700 joined their internships.
 
Second Round of Pilot Project:
- Partner companies posted over 1.18 lakh internship opportunities, including new and revised unfilled positions from the previous round, across 735 districts of the country.
 - This round received over 4.55 lakh applications from more than 2.14 lakh applicants.
 - As of 17 July 2025, partner companies have made over 71,000 internship offers to youth in the second round, with more than 22,500 offers accepted.
 
About the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS)

- Announced in the Budget 2024–25.
 - It aims to provide internships in India’s top 500 companies to one crore youth over five years.
 - The pilot project was launched on October 3, 2024, with a target of facilitating 1.25 lakh internships in one year.
 - This scheme aims at making India the ‘Skill Capital of the World”.
 - The Ministry of Corporate Affairs is implementing it with officers from the Indian Corporate Law Service (ICLS) cadre overseeing its execution.
 - At the regional level, the Regional Directorate (Northwestern) serves as the key implementing agency.
 - A simplified PMIS Portal and a dedicated mobile app have been developed to help users easily search and apply for internships.
 - Through this app, candidates can apply for up to three internships simultaneously, making the application process more flexible and accessible.
 - The PMIS mobile app also features a Referral Program launched by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
 - Registered users can refer other eligible candidates and earn rewards for successful referrals which is available on both the PMIS mobile app and the official web portal.
 - These platforms allow candidates to filter opportunities by district, state, sector and location radius for better accessibility and convenience.

- Monthly Assistance: Rs. 5,000 per month for 12 months.
 - One-time Grant: Rs. 6,000 for incidental expenses.
