Context:

Recently, the Union Minister of State for Forest, Environment and Climate Change launched ‘Nano Bubble Technology’ for cleaning and purifying water of the National Zoological Park, Delhi to promote the health of aquatic animals.

More on the News:

  • This initiative aims to improve the water quality in the zoo’s ponds by removing algae, bad odours, and discolouration caused by pollution.
  • It is being tested in the zoo for the first time as a 15-day trial.
  • If successful, the technology could be more widely adopted throughout the zoo, offering long-term benefits for both the animals and the environment.

About Nano Bubbles:

  • Nanobubbles are tiny bubbles measuring 70-120 nanometers, about 2,500 times smaller than a grain of salt.
  • They can be created by injecting any gas into liquids.
  • Due to their unique physical and chemical properties, nanobubbles are more effective than traditional aeration methods.
  • They are used in various industries, including water treatment, agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, and more.

Properties of Nanobubbles:

Nanobubbles have a strong negative charge, which enhances their ability to separate particles during flotation processes.

  • This makes them effective in removing suspended matter in wastewater, oil, and gas operations.

Nanobubbles have a high surface area relative to their size, which allows more gas to interact with the liquid.

  • Their small size and buoyancy help them stay suspended in water, boosting gas transfer efficiency.

Nanobubbles remain in the water for long periods, helping to distribute oxygen evenly throughout and maintain high dissolved oxygen levels for extended periods.

Nanobubbles are highly efficient at transferring oxygen into water, achieving up to 90% oxygen transfer efficiency due to their large surface area.

Benefits of Using Nanobubbles:

Nanobubbles can effectively remove pollutants, bacteria, and contaminants from water.

Nanobubbles help improve fluid flow in oil and gas recovery processes, increasing efficiency and reducing the need for chemicals.

Nanobubbles enhance the absorption of skincare products, promoting healthier skin.

Nanobubbles penetrate deep into surface pores, offering thorough cleaning, even for tough dirt and grime.

By supplying oxygen, nanobubbles promote the growth and health of plants and aquatic organisms.

  • They improve nutrient absorption, reduce the need for pesticides, and boost crop yields.
