Context:
India is hosting the 20th edition of India-USA bilateral joint Military Exercise, Yudh Abhyas.
About Exercise Yudh Abhyas
- This exercise is scheduled to run from September 9 to 22, 2024.
- Since its inception in 2004, this exercise has been held annually, alternating between India and the USA.
- Location: At the Foreign Training Node in the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges, Rajasthan.
Objectives:
- To enhance joint military capability of both sides to undertake counter terrorism operations in a sub conventional scenario under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter.
- It will take place in a semi-desert environment, focusing on joint responses to terrorist actions, collaborative planning and field training, and the simulation of real-world counter-terrorism missions.
Participating Forces:
- The Indian Army contingent comprising 600 personnel by a battalion of the RAJPUT Regiment along with personnel from other arms and service.
- U.S. troops representing 1-24 Battalion of the Alaska based 11th Airborne Division of the American army and deploying advanced equipment such as Stryker infantry vehicles and the M142 HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System).
- Significance: To share best practices in tactics, develop interoperability and camaraderie, and enhance defense cooperation, strengthening bilateral relations between India and the USA
