Context: The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has granted approval for the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail project, which will connect Uttar Pradesh’s capital, Lucknow, with the industrial city Kanpur.

  • Once operational, the project will reduce travel time from two hours to just 45 minutes.
  • The corridor will start near Lucknow’s Amausi Airport and end at Ganga Barrage in Kanpur, Spanning 90 km .
  • The corridor will run alongside the existing road and rail network, passing through Jaitipur and Magarwara in Unnao.
  • It will be implemented under the Namo Bharat Rail Corridor scheme (NBRCS).
  • \The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has commenced work on the corridor after receiving a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the LDA.  
  • The NCRTC has confirmed that the project aligns fully with Lucknow’s Master Plan 2031, which emphasizes transit-oriented development (TOD) to promote urban sustainability.
  • Originally conceptualized in 2015, the project experienced delays due to various factors, including the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Lucknow-Kanpur Namo Bharat Raid Rail:
  • The corridor will run parallel to the road from Amausi to Bani, and from Bani to Ganga Barrage, it will follow the railway line connecting the two major cities of the state.
  • The route will feature six stations: Lucknow, Banthra Town, Nawabganj, Basiratganj, Unnao, and Kanpur.
  • Starting from Amausi, the corridor will be easily accessible to all of Lucknow via the metro network.
  • It will also benefit Kanpur residents arriving at Amausi Airport by offering seamless, traffic-free travel.
  • Trains on the corridor will operate at a speed of 160 kmph.
