  • In 1886, the specific date of May 1 was chosen to commemorate a nationwide strike for an eight-hour workday, which resulted in many people being injured. This incident came to be known as The Haymarket Affair.
  • As for India, the first May Day was celebrated in Chennai by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan.
