Context:
Recently, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) delivered, the sixth final Scorpene-class submarine, INS Vaghsheer to the Indian Navy.
More on the News:
- Vaghsheer was launched in April 2022 and underwent a series of thorough tests and trials for over a year to ensure that it is a fully combat-ready submarine capable of operating in all modes and deployment conditions.
- This submarine has been named after the original INS Vaghsheer (an earlier Vela-class submarine that was decommissioned in 1997) after 22 years of service in the Indian Navy.
- It is part of the Kalvari-class (Project 75) submarines.
Key Features of the Vaghsheer:
Technology and Stealth Features:
- The Scorpene-class submarine uses state-of-the-art technology ensuring superior stealth features.
- It includes advanced acoustic absorption, low radiated noise, and a hydro-dynamically optimized shape.
- These features allow the submarine to launch precise attacks with torpedoes and tube-launched anti-ship missiles, both underwater and on the surface.
Mission Capabilities:
- Vaghsheer can perform various missions, including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, and area surveillance.
- It is designed to operate in all environments and work seamlessly with other parts of a naval task force.
Automation and Integrated Systems:
- The submarine has a high level of automation with an Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) and a Combat Management System (CMS).
- These systems integrate various equipment, sensors, and technologies into one powerful platform.
Additional Features:
- Vaghsheer is equipped with an indigenously developed air conditioning plant “Air-independent propulsion (AIP) and an internal communication and broadcast system.
- It also features upgraded main batteries and Ku-Band SATCOM (Rukmini), differentiating it from the previous five submarines.
Performance:
- Speed: Its maximum submerged speed is 20 knots (37 km/h) and a surface speed of 11 knots (20 km/h).
- Diving Depth: It can dive at depths of 350 meters, giving it a tactical edge and can stay at sea for upto 50 days.
