Context:
Recently, the Government of India has approved the country’s sixth semiconductor manufacturing unit.

- The unit will be established under the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) in the Jewar area of Gautam Buddha Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh, as a joint venture between HCL and Foxconn.
- The estimated investment in the project is ₹3,706 crore.
- The plant is expected to begin commercial production by 2027 and will primarily manufacture display driver chips for mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, PCs, and other electronic devices.
- The new plant is designed with a production capacity of 20,000 wafers per month, capable of producing an estimated 36 million units monthly.
- Students and entrepreneurs from 270 academic institutions and 70 startups are working on cutting-edge design technologies to develop new products. Twenty of these products, developed by students, have already been adopted by SCL Mohali.
- Five major semiconductorunits are under construction across the country to ensure self-reliance in the semiconductor sector by the Government of India.
- American multinational chip company Micron Technology is setting up a semiconductor assembly and testing facility at Sanand (near Ahmedabad), Gujarat. The unit is likely to become operational by December 2025.
- The second unit is being set up by Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) in collaboration with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation of Taiwan at Dholera Special Investment Region (Dholera SIR), Gujarat. It will be a full-fledged semiconductor fab unit that will lay the foundation for chip manufacturing within India.
- The third unit, Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Private Limited, is being set up in Morigaon district of Assam.
- The fourth unit is being developed by CG Power in collaboration with Renesas Electronics America Inc. of Japan and Stars Microelectronics of Thailand at Sanand, Gujarat.
- The fifth unit, Kenes Technology India Limited (KTIL) is an Indian company setting up an outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facility at Sanand, Gujarat. This reflects the innovation potential and production capabilities of the domestic industry.
