India to receive its first guided-missile warship, INS Tushil, from Russia by the end of November 2024 at Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad.

  • India signed a deal in 2018 to procure four Grigorovich-class frigates; two are imported from Russia with a $1 billion deal for direct purchase and two will be built in India.
  • Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) is manufacturing two frigates, with deliveries expected in 2026 and 2027.
  • INS Tushil, the first of two Krivak or Talwar-class stealth frigates and India already operates six similar Russian-built frigates.
  • The second frigate, INS Tamal, will be delivered early next year. Both stealth frigates will be equipped with advanced weaponry, including BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles.
  • Features:
  • The ship is named Tushil, meaning “protector shield” in Sanskrit.
  • The ships are designed for multi-role naval warfare, with a combination of Indian and Russian weapons and sensors.
  • The frigates feature stealth technology, including low radar and noise signatures.
  • Indian-supplied equipment includes missiles, sonar, radar and ASW systems, alongside Russian systems.
