Context: 

According to the World Migration Report 2024, India received over $111 billion in remittances in 2022, the largest in the world. 

Key highlights of the report

  • The United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM) released the World Migration Report, 2024 in Dhaka
  • India is the origin of the largest number of international Migrants nearly 18 million with large diasporas in UAE, US and Saudi Arabia.
  • India continues its march as the top country receiving remittances from its diaspora.
  • India was the top country receiving remittances in 2010 ($53.48 billion), 2015 ($68.91 billion), and 2020 ($83.15 billion), and it reached $111.22 billion in 2022.
  • In 2022, Mexico maintained its position as the second-largest recipient of remittances, a ranking it secured in 2021 after surpassing China.G7 countries France and Germany remained in the top 10 countries  for receiving remittances globally in 2022.
  • Three countries in Southern Asia — India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, rank among the top ten recipients of international remittances in the world
  • Within the top 10 international country-to-country migration corridors, significant routes included India to the United Arab Emirates, India to the United States, India to Saudi Arabia, and Bangladesh to India.
  • In 2021, India ranks second after China with (more than 0.5 million) as the origin of internationally mobile students in the world. 
  • The United States is the top destination for international students, hosting more than 833,000 students, followed by the United kingdom and Australia).

United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM)

  • It was established in 1951, as a part of the United Nations System and stands as the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration.
  • Currently, it has 175 member states, a further 8 states holding observer status.
  • On 18th June 2008, India officially became the member after receiving observer status in 1991.
  • Headquarters: Geneva, Switzerland
  • The report also stated that India is the 13th most popular destination for immigrants, with 4.48 million people coming from other countries to live in India.

About World Migration Report

The first World Migration Report was published in 2000, initially as a one-off report designed to increase the understanding of migration by policymakers and the general public.

It is released every two years. The World Migration Report 2024, is the twelfth in the World Migration Report series.
