Context:

The government is working on a 100-day agenda for Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0.

More on the news

  • Under the AMRUT 2.0, cities are likely to initiate projects worth Rs 5,000 crore, covering water supply, sewage treatment, and rejuvenation of water bodies and parks.

Under the 100-day agenda 

  • To commission sewage treatment plants (STPs) with a total capacity of 500 million litres a day (MLD) that would benefit around 6 lakh households. 
  • 150 MLD of water treatment plants for 2 lakh households.
  • The government’s 100-day agenda also comprises approval for long-pending proposals including notification of the Delhi Master Plan 2041, and the incubation of eight greenfield cities to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore each in the country, as recommended by the 15th Finance Commission report.

AMRUT  

  • It was launched on 25th June 2015 in selected 500 cities and towns across the country.
  • It focuses on water supply, sewerage and septage management, stormwater drainage, green spaces and parks, and non-motorized urban transport. 

AMRUT Mission 2.0

  • AMRUT Mission has been subsumed under AMRUT 2.0, for the period of 05 years (2021-22 to 2025-26) which was launched on 01st October 2021 and ongoing projects of AMRUT 1.0 was funded with central assistance till 31st March 2023.
  • To provide universal coverage of water supply through functional taps to all households in all the statutory towns in the country and coverage of sewerage/septage management in 500 cities covered in the first phase of the AMRUT scheme
  • It will promote the circular economy of water through the development of a City Water Balance Plan (CWBP) for each city focusing on recycling/reuse of treated sewage, rejuvenation of water bodies, and water conservation.

Other components of AMRUT 2.0 are:

  • Pey Jal Survekshan to ascertain equitable distribution of water, reuse of wastewater, mapping of water bodies, and promote healthy competition among the cities /towns.
  • Information, Education and Communication (IEC) campaign to spread awareness among masses about the conservation of water.
  • Technology Sub-Mission for water to leverage latest global technologies in the field of water.
