Recently, the Union Commerce Minister held that the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the first-ever air shipment of GI-tagged Indi Lime from Karnataka and Puliyankudi Lime from Tamil Nadu to the United Kingdom.

About Indi Lime

  • Indi Lime is primarily cultivated in the Vijayapura district of Karnataka.
  • It is known for its high quality, zesty aroma, rich juice content, and balanced acidity.
  • The lime’s distinct flavour and regional uniqueness highlight the agricultural strength of Vijayapura, representing Karnataka’s agricultural heritage.
  • It has cultural and medicinal relevance through its use in traditional healing and cultural traditions.
  • The Indi Lime is the 2nd lime variety after the Assam Lime to receive the prestigious GI recognition. It got the GI tag in 2023.

About Puliyankudi Lime

  • Puliyankudi is known as the “Lemon City of Tamil Nadu” and is located in the Tenkasi district.
  • The region is renowned for extensive lime cultivation, especially the Kadayam variety.
  • The key characteristics of Puliyankudi Lime are thin peel, strong acidity, high ascorbic acid content (34.3 mg/100g), high juice yield (around 55%), nutritionally rich, containing vitamin C and antioxidants.
  • It supports immunity, digestion, and provides exceptional flavour and quality.
  • It received its Geographical Indication (GI) tag in April 2025, recognising its unique regional and nutritional attributes.

Significance of Initiative:

  • Expansion of Agri-export basket: The milestone unlocks fresh avenues for expanding the global footprint of India’s GI-tagged horticultural produce.
  • Globalization of India’s Agri-heritage: GI Tagged Products will create global awareness about India’s unique agri-heritage and promote the region-specific produce internationally.
  • Farmer’s welfare: By connecting farmer-producer groups with global consumers, it is strengthening the export ecosystem while ensuring that growers receive better incomes through branding and market diversification.
  • Collaborative Federalism: The successful shipment reflect the strong collaboration between the state and central agencies, exporters and farmer groups.
  • Technological Integration: Utilization of Air Shipment especially for perishable Agri-products not only creates effective market linkage but also reduces the post-harvest losses.
