Recently, International Labour Day (ILD) was observed on 1st May.
Significance
- This day is dedicated to recognising the contributions and achievements of workers worldwide and promoting workers’ rights and opportunities.
- It is annually observed on May 1 in more than 80 countries including India.
Origin of International Labour Day
- ILD was first started in the late 19th-century labour movement in the United States.
- In 1886, the specific date of May 1 was chosen to commemorate a nationwide strike for an eight-hour workday, which resulted in many people being injured. This incident came to be known as The Haymarket Affair.
- As for India, the first May Day was celebrated in Chennai by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan.
