Context:

The Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD), in collaboration with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), launched the initiative ‘NAVYA’ (Nurturing Aspirations through Vocational Training for Young Adolescent Girls) in Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh.

  • The NAVYA programme was jointly launched by Minister of State (Independent Charge), MSDE, MWCD and Minister of State.
  • It is a collaborative initiative between the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
  • It will be implemented in 27 aspirational districts across 19 states, aiming to extend equal opportunities to even the most underserved regions and equip girls to face future challenges.
  • NAVYA has been launched to offer adolescent girls training in various fields to help them become self-reliant.
  • Under the NAVYA programme, adolescent girls will be trained in skills such as graphic design, telecom and financial services, smartphone and drone assembly, solar PV and CCTV installation, and hand embroidery equipping them for new opportunities in a rapidly changing job market.
  • The training will be delivered using existing resources from flagship MSDE schemes like Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) and PM Vishwakarma Yojana.
  • Girls selected by the Ministry of Women and Child Development will undergo short-term vocational training under the PMKVY scheme.
  • The training will extend beyond employment opportunities, empowering girls to start small businesses and establish their own enterprises.
  • To ensure successful implementation, district skill committees are being reinforced to link girls with local skill development programs, job fairs, and entrepreneurship opportunities.
