Context:

Uttar Pradesh has achieved a major educational milestone, with Class 3 students outperforming the national average in language and mathematics, according to the Parakh National Survey 2024.

  • UP students have outperformed the national level at this stage for the first time.
  • This achievement stems from a survey conducted on December 4, 2024, with participation from all 75 districts of the state.
  • This year, Class 3 students in Uttar Pradesh achieved an average score of 68 in language and 64 in mathematics, surpassing the national averages of 64 and 60 respectively.
  • Districts such as Kasganj, Shamli, Auraiya, Ambedkarnagar, and Mahoba have been key contributors to this progress.
  • This performance is especially significant, as Uttar Pradesh had lagged behind in the 2021 National Achievement Survey.
  • In Class 6, students in Uttar Pradesh scored 55 in language and 45 in mathematics, slightly below the national averages of 57 and 46.
  • In Class 9, they scored 38 in science, 34 in mathematics, and 37 in social science, compared to the national averages of 40, 37, and 40 respectively.
  • Districts like Varanasi, Ayodhya, Prayagraj, and Shamli showed strong performance in Class 9.
  • Evaluation Method:
  • Class 3 students were evaluated with a 90-minute test covering Language, Maths, and ‘The World Around Us.’
  • Class 6 and 9 students were assessed through tests lasting 90 and 120 minutes, respectively, in Language, Maths, Science, and Social Science.

  • National Assessment Centre- PARAKH (Performance Assessment, Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development) was set up in NCERT as an independent constituent unit.
  • To fulfil the basic objectives of setting norms, standards, guidelines and implement activities related to student assessment along with other tasks as mandated the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

  • PARAKH has developed Holistic Progress Cards (HPC) for the foundational, preparatory, and middle stages, and is currently working on the HPC for the secondary stage to support competency-based, holistic assessments.
