Historical background

  • Earth Day was founded in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson of the United States of America after witnessing a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, in 1969. 
  • In 1990, Earth Day went truly global, mobilising 200 million people in 141 countries and lifting environmental issues onto the world stage.
  • In 2009, the United Nations designated Earth Day as International Mother Earth Day.
  • The landmark Paris Agreement, which brings almost 200 countries together to set a common target to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions, was signed on Earth Day 2016.
