Context:
The Uttar Pradesh government has introduced the ‘One KGBV-One Sport’ scheme to empower young girls from marginalized communities and promote gender inclusivity in sports within Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs), residential schools for weaker sections.
More On News:
- The scheme was approved during the recent PAB (Project and Approval Board) meeting held in Delhi, with a total budget allocation of Rs 19.25 crore.
- In the first phase, 145 KGBVs across Uttar Pradesh were selected.
- Two KGBVs from each of the 73 districts (except Kanpur Dehat, which has one) will be part of the pilot project.
- The fundamental concept of the scheme is to assign one dedicated sport to each participating school, enabling students to focus on and excel in one specific discipline.
- The government will provide specialized infrastructure and coaching to help develop competitive teams, enabling girls to compete at the district, state, and even national or international levels.
- The scheme also aims to combat gender stereotypes in sports, creating a space for girls in areas traditionally dominated by males.
- Each KGBV will form a sports committee to select sports based on available resources and student interest, with the aim to narrow the gender gap and ensure girls from KGBVs excel in sports.
