Context:
The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister inaugurated India’s first Biopolymer Manufacturing Plant in Kumbhi, Lakhimpur.
- It is set to manufacture eco-friendly alternatives to single-use plastics owned by Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd (BCML), the largest sugar industry in Uttar Pradesh.
- It will contribute to achieving the national goal of net zero emissions.
- The facility is set to produce eco-friendly alternatives to single-use plastics, focusing on biopolymer production.
- The plant will be built with a cost of Rs 2,850 crore and aims to create jobs and reduce environmental pollution.
- The plant’s initial production capacity will be 80,000 tonnes, with the goal of reducing the sugar-to-PLA conversion ratio from 1.6 kg to 1.2 kg per kilogram of PLA.
About Biopolymer
- It is a biodegradable and sustainable polymer, offering eco-friendly alternatives in various sectors.
- It plays a crucial role in combating global warming by replacing traditional plastics.
- Benefits of Biopolymer
- Environment Benefits
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions: Biopolymers are derived from renewable sources like corn, sugar cane, or sugar beet, which reduces reliance on fossil fuels.
- Reduce environmental hazards: Biopolymers can replace petrochemical plastics, which can be harmful to the environment.
- Health benefits
- Biocompatibility: Biopolymers are suitable for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications because they are biocompatible.
- Low immunogenicity: Biopolymers have low immunogenicity, making them suitable for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications.
