Recently, QS Quacquarelli Symonds, the global higher education expert, has released the third edition of the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2025.

- IIT Delhi claims the top position in India, ranking 171st globally, an impressive improvement of 255 ranks. It is followed by IIT Kharagpur at 202nd globally, with an increase of 147 ranks, and IIT Bombay securing 3rd place in India, climbing 69 ranks to 234th globally.
- A total of 78 Indian universities feature in the 2025 QS Sustainability Rankings, with nine out of the top 10 institutions in India improving their rankings. Notably, 21 universities have made their debut in this year’s rankings.
- In the Environmental Impact category, IIT Delhi ranks 55th, followed by IIT Kanpur (87th) and IIT Bombay (101st).
- IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras secured the 4th and 5th ranks in India, improving by 177 and 67 ranks, with global ranks of 245 and 277, respectively.
- The University of Delhi is the only Indian university to decline, dropping from 220th last year to 299th this year, but remains 6th in India.
- IIT Delhi (IITD) is the top Indian university in Social Impact (362) and Environmental Impact (55) and ranks highest in Employability and Outcomes (116) and Environmental Research (256).
- Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) leads India in the Governance category and ranks 390th globally for Equality.
- IIT Bombay excels in Environmental Sustainability (38th globally), while IIT Kharagpur ranks best in India for Impact of Education (676) and Health and Wellbeing (391).
- University of Delhi ranks 121st globally for Knowledge Exchange, and IISc is 32nd globally for Environmental Education.
- Of the 78 Indian universities in the 2025 QS Sustainability rankings, 34 have improved their positions. While the Impact of Education and Health and Wellbeing still has room for improvement, IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Roorkee, and IIT-Delhi made significant gains in Health and Wellbeing. IIT-Madras and IIT-Bombay also saw major improvements in the Impact of the Education lens.
- Ben Sowter, Vice President of QS, commended these advancements, highlighting India’s progress in sustainability.
Global Rankings:
- The University of Toronto ranks 1st globally, followed by ETH Zurich in 2nd, and Lund University and University of California, Berkeley tied at 3rd.
- This year, seven African universities are in the top 500, with University of Cape Town leading at 45th. Cairo University is ranked 370th.
- Australia has 14 universities in the top 100, with University of Melbourne ranked 9th, and QUT is the only Australian university to improve its position.
- In Asia, six universities from four countries are in the top 100, with University of Tokyo ranked 44th. Mainland China has 114 ranked universities, with Fudan University leading at 133rd, but no Chinese university is in the top 100.
