Context:

On the completion of 100 glorious years of the use of electric engines of railways, a pledge of further improvement was taken in the loco shed located at Fazalganj, Kanpur.

  • Stickers marking 100 years were placed on train engines to convey the message of railway strengthening, alongside discussions on future manufacturing, repairs, and increased engine capacity.
  • India’s first electric train ran on February 3, 1925, using 1500V DC between CSMT (then Victoria Terminus) and Kurla, covering 16 kilometers.
  • As 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of electric traction in India, the country is also set to achieve 100% electrification of its broad-gauge network.
  • The South Indian Railway electrified its suburban network from Madras Beach (now Chennai) to Tambaram using the 1500V DC system, completed by 1931. This section is one of the few Meter Gauge lines electrified in India.
